Their name is often shortened to "A7X", and they would definitely fit in the Heavy Metal bracket. The band grew out of Huntington Beach, California, in 1999.
A7x were very much part of The New Wave of American Heavy Metal.
A7X emerged with a Metalcore vibe, through their first album; Sounding the Seventh Trumpet. Their style had evolved by their third album and first major label release, City of Evil, into a more Hard Rock and Heavy Metal style.
They carried on checking out new sounds with their self-titled release and this gave them continued commercial success before their drummer, James "The Rev" Sullivan, passed away in 2009, in spite of this, the band continued on with help of the now former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy and released and toured in support of their fifth album Nightmare in 2010 which debuted on the top spot of the Billboard 200, their first number one debut.
The 2013 release, Hail to the King, marked the album debut of the new drummer Arin Ilejay, this album hit the charts at number 1 in the US Billboard 200, the UK albums chart, as well as the Finnish, Brazilian, Canadian, and Irish charts.
Currently, A7X have put out six studio albums, one live album/compilation/DVD, and eighteen singles and have sold over 10 million albums worldwide.
