Intro

Blues, a style of music with vocal and instrumental styles based on the use of “blue notes.”

Info

It emerged out of the African American communities in the United States, from spiritual songs, work songs and simple narrative ballads and elements of Gospel.

The use of blue notes and the prominence of call-and-response patterns in the music and lyrics are indicative of the African influence.

“Blue notes,” also known as “worried notes,” are generally the flattened third, fifth, and sevenths in a major scale. This is what gives Blues its inherent tone.

Blues will differ from one performer to another, or from sub genre to sub genre.

The blues influenced much of later popular music. It became one of the roots of Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Rock and Bluegrass.
