Along with Bill Hicks, George Denis Patrick Carlin is one of the greatest comedians to have ever graced the earth. Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008) was a stand up comedian primarily, but also a social commenter, satirist, actor, philosopher and writer.
Carlin was born in Manhattan, son of Patrick Carlin Mary Beary. His family was of Irish ancestry and he was raised a Roman Catholic. Carlin's mother separated from his father when George was two months old. Carlin had a difficult relationship with his mother. Carlin attended a Romance Catholic parish school of the Corpus Christi Church. Carlin left Cardinal Hayes High School when he was 15. He attended several high schools for a brief period of time and spent summers at Camp Notre Dame in Spofford, New Hampshire, where he regularly won the camp drama award. He wished for a portion of ashes to be sprinkled at the lake after his death. Carlin joined the United Sates Air Force and trained as a radar technician but he was eventually discharged in 1957.
