Progressive metal is a subgenre of Heavy Metal, which blends a powerful, guitar-driven sound with complex compositional structures, non standard time signatures, and intricate musicianship.

Progressive metal is guitar-driven and often features varying changes in time signatures, much in a similar way to Jazz. The genre is also known for including complex and extended guitar solos. Consequently, progressive metal songs can become relatively long.

Progressive metal, is mostly a sub genre of Rock and Heavy Metal, but has many offshoots. Elements of progressive metal can be found in Death Metal, Black Metal, Industrial metal, Metalcore, Thrash Metal, Mathcore and Power Metal, among other genres.
