Speed metal is a sub-genre of Heavy Metal originating in the late 1970’s to mid 80’s that grew from Power Metal and Thrash Metal.

Speed metal can be identified by staccato drumming, single-note riffing, fast tempos and complex guitar solos. Unlike Thrash Metal, Speed Metal uses more melodic hook lines, combined with lyrical themes more common to Heavy Metal.

Some of the better known speed metal bands would include Motörhead, Judas Priest, Venom, Anthrax, Megadeth and Children of Bodom
